Lee’s losses were 12,800, including the irreplaceable Jackson, who died a few days later.  In a brilliant maneuver the Union army marched north from Fredericksburg, crossed the river, and took up positions around the Chancellorsville crossroads by April 30.  On May 2 Jackson surprised and routed the Union right flank.  On May 3 fighting took place at both Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg, where Union forces attacked and drove the Confederates away and advanced to Salem Church.  On May 5 and 6 Union forces retreated across the river.

Constructed in the fall of 1861, the forts were part of a Confederate defensive line that stretched across Kentucky from Columbus on the Mississippi River to Mill Springs in the Appalachian foothills. Fort Henry guarded the Tennessee River, and Fort Donelson the nearby Cumberland River. The waterways crossed the Kentucky–Tennessee border 65 miles (105 km) northwest of Nashville. Curriculum Context Ulysses S. Grant features in some curricula as an example of an individual who influenced the course of the war.

Lee’s Confederates began arriving from the north and northwest, while Meade’s lead corps began arriving from the south. P. Hill was Gettysburg, Battle of 51 reinforcing Heth, while John F. Reynolds, commander of the Union I Corps, established a defensive line across the Chambersburg Pike at McPherson’s Ridge. Reynolds fell in action, and Abner Doubleday took over his corps command. Fighting developed north of the town with the arrival of Oliver O. Howard’s Union XI Corps in the afternoon. They were pushed back through the town by two divisions of Ewell’s corps, led by Jubal A.
